Hello!
I have been teaching at Rising Sun Elementary since 2003. I have taught students with
special needs in Preschool, Pre-k, Kindergarten, First grade, and Second grade. I also
taught 2nd grade for 11 years. I went to college at the University of Delaware and
received my Master's degree from Wilmington University.
I live in North East with my husband and daughter, Sophia. If you are in my class you will
hear me talk a lot about Mr. Day, Sophia, our dogs Maverick and Edward, and our cat JJ.
We love hanging out with family, going swimming, watching movies, and playing
together. In the fall we love watching the Ravens play!
I am so excited for another fun year in Pre-K! I can't wait to get to know all of my
students and their families!

Mrs. Melissa Kananen
Hi everyone! Welcome to Pre-Kindergarten! I am a graduate of the University of Delaware with degrees in Elementary and Special Education with a concentration in Early Childhood Education. I have been teaching for over 23 years with the past 12 years being here at RSES!
I have taught 5th Grade Resource and 1st Grade Self-Contained in Delaware. Here at Rising Sun I have taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade as an inclusion teacher, 1st Grade General Education and for the past few years, Pre-Kindergarten. I love teaching Pre-Kindergarten here at RSES!
I live in Chester County, PA with my fiancé Brian and our 3 dogs; Eddie, Mozart and Fresno. I have 2 children; Meredith, a labor and delivery nurse, and Michael, an Athletic Training student at Penn State University.

Mrs. Melissa Murphy
Hello RSES Pre-K families! I am so excited to begin another year teaching at Rising Sun
Elementary! I spent the first 12 years of my teaching career at RSES teaching
Kindergarten and am looking forward to my eighth year in our full-day Pre-K program.
I am a Perryville High School graduate and earned my teaching
certificate and Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Towson
University. I also earned my Master’s degree from Walden University in Curriculum
and Instruction. In addition, I have a graduate certificate in Autism in the Classroom
from Towson University.
I currently live in Harford County with my husband, Tim, our two children, Rylan and
Gwen, my father-in-law, and our dogs, Bella and Ginger. In my free time, you can
usually find me at my kids’ sport practices - football, basketball, soccer, and flag
football! We are always busy!! We also enjoy working out at the gym, swimming,
and watching movies together for fun. I also love to read!
I am looking forward to a great year getting to know your kiddos and helping them kick
off their school experience!
